Anti choking device for infants and childs.

The project seeks to raise awareness of the issue and probability of suffocation from a foreign body and offers a life-saving solution. The product is designed for the treatment of infants and children up to the age of 5, and offers an alternative to the Heimlich maneuver.

It is important to understand that the treatment of a suffocating person must be immediate, so anyone nearby the victim must be able to offer some form of treatment, or at least call for help as quickly as possible. Therefore, I designed a product that is:

- Compact and available at any time.

- Gives an ergonomic solution to a wide range of users of varying ages.

- Allows intuitive handling, even under pressure.

- Reduces the number of actions required from the handler to a minimum.

- Provides a mechanical solution that saves critical time.

The case

To properly maintain the product until it's needed, I designed a protective carrying case. The case protects it from damages, unwanted initiation of action, and keeps all components sterile until use.

The colors of the case match those of the product. They help it stand out, whilst allowing it to integrate organically in a given space. In addition, the colors clearly guide the handler to the intended grip area and opening section.

The case is made of two ABS shells that are lined inside with a softening layer of EVA, that protects the product. While designing a closure mechanism for the case I emphasized a swift operation in case of an emergency. Therefore, I designed a closure mechanism comprised of magnets and a peripheral snap along the case’s silhouette, that keeps it safely sealed while easily opened once necessary.

Inside the case, there is an additional protective shell that stabilizes the product. It contains an imprinted call for action, reminding the handler to call for emergency medical service, and a comprehensive instruction page to guide him.

The way this inner shell was designed and positioned also forces a correct grip of the product, without raising the handler’s attention.

The app

To create a more holistic solution and to generate an active community of users, I designed an app to support the product. That way, each user can view instructional videos, and join a newsletter offering tips and extensive information about suffocation prevention, helpful practices during emergencies, and more.
